What is a Good Temperature to Set your Thermostat in the Summer?

A functional thermostat is something every household needs when the temperatures are too high and the summer heat gets intolerable.

In a situation like this, it is necessary to know the optimal thermostat setting that would not make you chilled to the bone neither it is insufficient that it makes you wilt away.

Furthermore, it is also important to set your thermostat on a setting that does not spike up your electricity bills and is energy-saving.

Let’s see what is the best temperature that is suitable for when you are home, away, or sleeping without causing your bills to get out of control.

What you must know about thermostats in the summer first

Many people have the misconception that if they set their thermostat to 58 degrees Fahrenheit, creating a cool environment, then they can get rid of the scorching summer heat but it’s not the case every time and so it is vital to understand the proper functionality of your thermostat that would not only provide a comfortable environment but would also keep the electricity bills in balance.
It is misguidedly considered a widespread common knowledge that setting your thermostat would cool a house faster but most people fail to grasp the fact that an air conditioner can only make the environment cooler by 15 to 20 degrees only compared to the outside environment. The lowest setting would only cause a massive blow to your electricity bills.

The ideal setting for your thermostat while being at home

Keeping your thermostat at 78 degrees may just be the right temperature to maintain that perfect balance between the environment and the bills. While the temperature may work best in keeping the bills low, it may prove not to be ideal for the family members.

Certain factors like the location of the home, direct sunlight, windows, and insulation can be responsible for the temperature not being ideal. The coolness of the environment can also be increased by utilizing ceiling fans, light clothes, and less cooking during the daytime.
The house can be set to comparatively higher temperatures at night when everyone is sleeping considering the simple fact that our body temperature lowers down when we are sleeping and hence higher room temperatures are too fairly tolerable.

It is advised by the Department of Energy to keep the thermostat setting from 80 to 82 degrees and sleep with light weight pyjamas and without blankets. These temperatures may not always work in every case thus it is important to experiment with temperatures that work best while keeping the bills low.

The Best Thermostat setting while you are away from home

There is always some point of the day where the family members may be out and not present at home. In scenarios like these, it is best to have a digitally smart thermostat that is easy to regulate.

If we consider the working days from Monday to Friday and from 8 to 5 it is best to set the thermostat on 88 degrees and then lower it when you reach home.
It is absolutely necessary to regulate your thermostat if you have pets, especially any pets ranging from cats, dogs, birds to small mammals which may feel more at ease with temperatures lower than 85.

The use of ceiling fans can also be done to make the environment less harsh and distribute the cooler temperatures across the house.

Bottomline

The US Department has informed what the most optimal and suitable thermostat setting can be for every season and according to that, it is suggested that 78 degrees Fahrenheit is the ideal temperature that would not only keep the surroundings calm and pleasant but would also help in keeping the electricity bills in check and control.

You can also set your thermostat at 88 degrees when you want to give a break to your equipment. The thermostat is also advised to be regulated if you have pets.
