Quick Power Setting Tweaks To Use Less Electricity in the Office

Electricity is the most wasted resource in the western hemisphere and is mostly squandered unnecessarily by the industrial sector. Many business owners are in the dark about small changes they could make to significantly reduce their electricity consumption.

Many companies are working to reduce their energy footprint in the current climate but both the executives and employees of a company must pitch in and do their own bit to not use more electricity than necessary. This means adopting small changes throughout every working practice.

Some of the quickest solutions that companies can implement are to use the power saving options that have been integrated into PCs that run Windows 7 OS or above.  These include an advanced sleep mode which reduces the PC to completely idle after a short time of inactivity and lighter colours for desktop backgrounds which mean the brightness of the monitors can be reduced, thus saving the amount of power used to illuminate the screen.

Adjust Screen Brightness

The same tip applies if your company uses laptops. Modern laptops can still be very power consuming and reducing their screen brightness to two-thirds power can save 1 Watt on a typical working day. If the company uses a series of laptops throughout the day, this could mean a serious power saving.

Be sure to also disable any power consuming features on the computers if they are not required for productivity. These include Skype and other conferencing programs that utilise a webcam. Audio outputs such as speakers are unlikely to be needed in an office environment and could be set to disabled as a default setting to stop them using energy unnecessarily. Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and SATA links are also very large energy consumers and are best disabled if not needed.

Personal Use

Policies can also be set in place to prevent employees using power sockets for personal use. This could include charging personal phones or other devices that require regular charging. Reminders to employees to switch off any reading lights and PCs at the end of the work day will also reduce the amount of electricity wasted. Energy and resources can also be saved by selecting to print documents on both sides of each page instead of wasting paper.

Energy Efficient Appliances

In order to affect more large scale energy saving policies to the company, ensure that all the equipment is upgraded to meet the ENERGY STAR criteria. This will ensure all the equipment in the office is as energy efficient as it can be. This may require a large scale upgrading but should return the investment via reductions in your energy bill over time.

If upgrading is required, be sure to consider purchasing multi-functional devices that can perform as many required tasks as possible. This may mean buying more expensive equipment but will save money in the long term as there will be fewer devices in your office.


Do not simply throw out the old equipment either. If they are still in working order, consider donating them to a charity or other recycling organization. It costs a lot of energy to dispose of electronic safely and can cause great environmental damage if disposed of improperly.
